Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) – Angel City FC defender Savy King “remains stable” on Saturday after she collapsed during a National Women’s Soccer League match against the Utah Royals on Friday, the NWSL said in a statement. The 20-year-old went down with what the club called a “medical event” in the 74th minute of the match and received on-field treatment from medical staff before she was stretchered from the pitch and taken to hospital.

“Savy left the field in stable condition, and currently remains stable and will be undergoing further evaluation,” the NWSL said on Saturday without elaborating on the nature of the emergency. “League protocols were followed from both a medical and game operations perspective. We are grateful to the Angel City medical staff as well as to local paramedics who handled this difficult situation seamlessly.”

As always, the NWSL will review and determine if changes to that protocol need to be made. We share everyone’s concern about Savy, and our thoughts are with her, her family, the Utah Royals players and staff, and the Angel City players, staff and community. Please respect her privacy.

Players from both teams gathered on the field after the match to pray for King. Angel City assistant coach Eleri Earnshaw said the player’s family and team medical staff were with her at the hospital. King was selected second overall by Bay FC in the 2024 NWSL Draft and was traded to Angel City on February 3, a move that brought her back to her hometown of Los Angeles.
