Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) – Cincinnati Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase was hit with a one-game suspension on Monday for spitting on Pittsburgh Steelers’ defender Jalen Ramsey, the NFL announced. Wide receiver Chase was seen appearing to spit at cornerback Ramsey during the fourth quarter of Cincinnati’s 34-12 defeat on Sunday. Ramsey aimed a punch at Chase following the incident and was promptly ejected from the game. Chase’s spitting incident was not seen by officials at the time.
However, video footage which emerged after the incident clearly showed Chase spitting on Ramsey. “During the fourth quarter, Chase spit on Pittsburgh cornerback Jalen Ramsey, violating Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to ‘any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship’,” the NFL said in a statement.
While Chase had denied spitting at Ramsey following the game, Bengals coach Zac Taylor said Monday his player had been in the wrong. “Obviously what happened is crossing the line, and we can’t have that. I know he’ll own up to that,” Taylor said while simultaneously defending Chase. “Ja’Marr’s one of my favorite players. Making one mistake doesn’t disregard everything this guy’s done that’s been positive for us. I can’t say enough positive things about Ja’Marr.”
