New York (AFP) – Denver Broncos linebacker Dre Greenlaw was issued a one-game suspension by the NFL on Monday for verbally threatening a referee, the league announced. The ban for unsportsmanlike conduct came for Greenlaw’s actions shortly after Denver’s 33-32 home victory over the New York Giants on Sunday. An NFL statement said Greenlaw “chased after referee Brad Allen and verbally threatened him as he tried to leave the field.”

Greenlaw can appeal his ban under terms of the league’s collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association. Greenlaw, however, is for now suspended for Denver’s home game Sunday against Dallas and eligible to return to the Broncos’ active roster next Monday.

A thigh injury kept Greenlaw from playing in Denver’s first six games of the season, making Sunday’s contest his first of the season and with the Broncos. He finished with six tackles.

Greenlaw, 28, signed a three-year deal with Denver worth $31.5 million in March after six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He suffered a torn left Achilles tendon in a Super Bowl 58 loss to Kansas City and missed most of the 2024 campaign.

The Broncos improved to 5-2 to seize the AFC West division lead with their victory.
