Miami (AFP) – Philadelphia shortstop Trea Turner, the team’s top hitter, made an early exit with a right hamstring strain in the seventh inning of a 5-4 Phillies loss Sunday at Miami. Turner reached first base on a Miami fielding error in the top of the seventh before being pulled from the Major League Baseball contest, walking off the field without assistance.

The 32-year-old American, who helped the Washington Nationals win the 2019 World Series, was an All-Star three of the past four seasons and the National League batting champion in 2021, when he was traded mid-season to the Los Angeles Dodgers. This season, Turner leads the NL with a .305 batting average as well as 179 season hits.

Turner smacked his 15th home run of the season in the sixth inning against the Marlins and has driven in 69 runs this year. Turner battled hamstring issues last year and has rested his body more this season, including taking off Philadelphia’s game on Saturday.

At 83-60, the Phillies have the second-best record in MLB, trailing only 89-55 Milwaukee, and lead the NL East division by seven games over the New York Mets.
