Washington (United States) (AFP) – The Baltimore Ravens named Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter as their new head coach on Thursday, replacing the sacked John Harbaugh with one of his former assistants. Minter arrives back in Baltimore after serving as a defensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh with the Chargers last season. Jim Harbaugh, the younger brother of John, had brought Minter with him to the Chargers after a stint at the University of Michigan that included a national championship.

Prior to that, Minter’s first NFL job was as a defensive assistant coach with John Harbaugh in Baltimore from 2017 to 2020. “I am truly honored to serve as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens,” Minter said in a statement. “This is an organization whose values, culture and tradition of excellence reflect everything I believe about the game of football and how it should be played.”

Minter’s hiring comes 16 days after the Ravens fired John Harbaugh, the 63-year-old who was the second-longest tenured coach in the NFL after 18 seasons in Baltimore. Appointed in 2008, Harbaugh famously led Baltimore to a Super Bowl victory over a San Francisco 49ers team coached by younger brother Jim in the 2011-2012 season, the so-called “Har-bowl.” He was dismissed after the Ravens were eliminated from postseason contention.

Minter will be the fourth head coach in the Ravens’ 31-year franchise history. “Jesse was impressive throughout our incredibly thorough interview process,” Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said. “He clearly understands the values, high expectations and history of the Ravens, and he has a great vision for the future.” Since he was fired by the Ravens, John Harbaugh has already been snapped up by the New York Giants, who named him their new coach last week.
