Washington (AFP) – Minnesota quarterback Carson Wentz was placed on injured reserve by the Vikings on Monday with expectations he will miss the remainder of the 2025 season following left shoulder surgery. When J.J. McCarthy was sidelined by a right ankle sprain after a 1-1 start, Wentz entered and went 2-3 for Minnesota as a replacement starting quarterback.

Multiple reports say Wentz has played through a dislocated shoulder with a torn labrum and fractured socket for the past three weeks and will have season-ending surgery. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell says McCarthy, who has returned to practice, is likely ready to return when Minnesota visits Detroit on Sunday.

Wentz, who signed a one-year deal as a backup in August, struggled in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday, and his 10th NFL campaign ends with 110 completions in 169 passes for 1,216 yards and six touchdowns with five interceptions. This year, Wentz became the first NFL quarterback to start for six different teams in six seasons, adding the Vikings to a list that began with Philadelphia in 2020 and continued with Indianapolis, Washington, the Los Angeles Rams, and Kansas City.
