Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) – Houston Astros infielder Carlos Correa tore a left ankle tendon in batting practice and will likely miss the rest of the Major League Baseball season, the team said Wednesday. Correa was a late scratch from the Astros’ 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday after he was injured taking swings in pre-game batting practice.

“I need surgery on the tendon on my left ankle,” Correa told reporters on Wednesday. “I was hitting in the cage, normal day, feeling great,” he said. “Went through a lot of routine, took a swing and just fell apart. It just completely snapped on me and then I fell to the ground and couldn’t put any weight on it.”

Correa was batting .279 with three home runs and 16 runs-batted-in this season. His injury is just the latest blow to a Houston team that has dealt with numerous injuries, including an oblique injury to catcher Yainer Diaz. Shortstop Jeremy Pena is recovering from a broken finger and hamstring strain.
