Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) – The Dallas Cowboys are parting ways with head coach Mike McCarthy after a disappointing 7-10 NFL season, team owner Jerry Jones said Monday.

McCarthy’s contract expired last week, but the team maintained a window to negotiate a potential new deal with him until Tuesday. “Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a joint review of all aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team,” Jones said in a statement. “These discussions were thorough and received an appropriate amount of time and depth to cover.”

Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction. The Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints are expected to be interested in speaking to McCarthy about their coaching vacancies, ESPN reported. The Bears made an official request for permission to speak to him last week, which the Cowboys denied.

McCarthy took the helm in Dallas in 2020, succeeding Jason Garrett. After a pandemic-disrupted inaugural season, he led three straight 12-win campaigns but he won just one playoff game during his tenure while suffering home defeats in the wild card round in 2021 and 2023. This season, McCarthy and the Cowboys dealt with a spate of injuries that saw quarterback Dak Prescott, cornerback Trevon Diggs, and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb finish the year on injured reserve.
