Doonbeg (Ireland) (AFP) – Donald Trump saw home favourite Shane Lowry take a four-shot lead into the final round of the Irish Open on Saturday at the Doonbeg course which bears the US President’s name.
After completing his political engagements in Dublin, golf fan Trump made a dramatic landing aboard helicopter Marine One on Ireland’s west coast at a course he has owned since 2014. Lowry’s surge to the top of the leaderboard has further energized the tournament. The 39-year-old won his home Open in 2009 as an amateur and claimed his only major on Irish soil at Royal Portrush seven years ago. However, Lowry has only won one individual event since.

The world number 53 produced a brilliant putting display to post a five-under-par round of 65 and reach 16 under for the tournament. “I had so much fun out there on the back nine. The crowds were incredible,” said Lowry. “They cheered me on the whole way home and hopefully will do the same tomorrow. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. Final group, leading my home tournament, it’s a nice place to be and it should be fun.”
Denmark’s Jacob Skov Olesen is second despite a costly three-putt on the 18th for his only bogey of the day. It will take a remarkable twist for the winner on Sunday not to come from the final group. Chile’s Joaquin Niemann is third on nine under, with Tom McKibbin and Daniel Rodrigues two shots further back.
Rory McIlroy will not defend his title after a miserable day for the Masters champion. McIlroy posted a 74 to fall back to two over for the tournament, but was heartened to see his close friend Lowry leading the way. “I think there’s a great buzz around the tournament because Shane’s up there and leading,” said the six-time major champion, who has previously played golf alongside Trump.
McIlroy added it was “pretty cool” to witness the commotion around Trump’s arrival. He confirmed he would be attending a dinner with Trump, who applauded the world number two at the 18th hole. Irish media reported Trump watched the third round from over the 18th green, flanked by his sons Eric and Don Jr. The 80-year-old is expected to attend the final round on Sunday and may even present the trophy to the winner.
