Paris (France) (AFP) – Emma Navarro beat Victoria Mboko on Saturday to win her first title in over a year at the Strasbourg Open. The former world number eight has dropped down the rankings in the past 12 months but put on a commanding performance to beat the upcoming Canadian star 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 before both travel across France to the capital for the start of Roland Garros.

“It’s kind of been a little bit of a rocky year and a half or so, but I think we put in a lot of really good work,” Navarro said on court. It was a third career title for the 25-year-old American and first on clay.

Mboko, 19, was considered the favourite before the match but struggled to get going as she lost the first set to love. The world number nine fought back from championship point down to claim the second set, but was unable to withstand Navarro in the third as the former US Open semi-finalist cruised to victory in two hours and 20 minutes.
