New York (AFP) – NHL officials said Tuesday they have trimmed the number of host candidates for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey to 16 cities, 10 in North America and six in Europe. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said after the conclusion of NHL club owners meetings in Colorado that the league will select one host in Europe and one in North America.

Each will host a round-robin pool in February 2028 leading to semi-finals and a final in the North American host city. The host cities are expected to be announced in February, likely after the Winter Olympics in Italy, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said.

Daly said Montreal and Boston, which hosted the NHL Four Nations Face-Off last season, were among the North American cities that bid on the Cup but revealed no specific cities in contention. “That process of evaluation is ongoing,” Bettman said. “We’re aware of how well both cities supported the event, but lots of cities are interested.”
