Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) – Jamahl Mosley was named as the New Orleans Pelicans’ new head coach on Monday, completing a swift return to the NBA just two weeks after he was dismissed by the Orlando Magic. Mosley, who was fired by Orlando on May 4 following the team’s first round playoff exit to the Detroit Pistons, has signed a five-year deal with New Orleans, reports said.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jamahl and his family to New Orleans,” Pelicans governor Gayle Benson said in a statement. “Jamahl is a proven winner and brings the type of leadership, accountability, and vision necessary to move our franchise forward,” Benson added.

Pelicans executive vice president Joe Dumars said Mosley’s track record of nurturing young talent made him an obvious fit for New Orleans. “Jamahl has earned tremendous respect across the NBA for his leadership, professionalism, and the strong relationships he develops with players and staff,” Dumars said. “He has consistently demonstrated an ability to develop young talent while establishing teams that compete with toughness, discipline, and togetherness …those qualities reinforce the long-term stability of a winning culture.”

Mosley joins New Orleans after spending five seasons in Orlando, where he helped take the Magic to three consecutive playoff appearances. Prior to that, he had spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at the Dallas Mavericks, where he helped take the team to the postseason on four occasions.
