Washington (AFP) – Thunderstorms allowed just 45 minutes of play at the LPGA NW Championship on Saturday, leaving organizers scrambling in a bid to complete the 54-hole event. The start of play at Pinnacle Country Club was delayed more than four hours, and once golfers got on the course, play was suspended again after just 45 minutes.

Play was finally halted for the day as dangerous lightning lingered over a course rendered unplayable by heavy rain. The second round was to resume on Sunday, when inclement weather was again in the afternoon forecast.

American Alison Lee, playing her third tournament since the birth of her son in April, was among the handful of players who got a few holes in. She teed off on 10 and jumped to a share of the lead on eight-under with a birdie at the par-four 12th. Lee had started the day a stroke behind first-round leaders Sarah Schmelzel of the United States and Minami Katsu of Japan, neither of whom teed off on Saturday.
